Vision in Children

The Importance of Vision Care

It is vital to monitor children's vision. Although vision problems affect approximately one-fourth of school age children, many of these problems are undetected and thus untreated. Since learning relies heavily on vision, unrevealed problems can have a substantial impact on a child's education and subsequent overall development.

Vision in Infants

Even infants need proper vision care. A newborn baby's eyes should be evaluated for any congenital disorders. He or she should then receive a comprehensive eye examination at 6 months. You can also help develop your infant's eyes with the following activities: Before 4 months, use mobiles and other toys they can reach for. From 4-8 months, let them explore through crawling and games like peek-a-boo. When children are 8-12 months, try stacking or take-apart toys. Finally, from the ages of 1 to 2, toy blocks, puzzles, or balls may help vision develop.

Vision in Preschoolers

Preschoolers should receive two comprehensive eye exams – one at three years and one just before they begin school. You can ask the optometrist about symptoms you should watch for that might indicate a vision problem. To help develop vision, let preschoolers watch as you read to them aloud, give them imagination-reliant toys such as finger paint, and take them to playgrounds.

Vision in School-Age Children

Children should receive eye exams every two years after their before-school exam. Although the child's school may offer vision screenings, this is not a substitute for a comprehensive exam. Likewise, if the child does not display any difficulties during the screening, it does not mean that the child is not affected by vision problems. Continue to watch for symptoms that might indicate a vision problem.

How Can I Save Money on Vision Care?

Proper vision care is vital for both adults and children, yet it is often overlooked because of the cost. You may be able to save a substantial amount of money through an insurance program, such as the vision plans offered through HumanaOne.
