Doctors of Optometry
The Role of an Optometrist
Doctors of Optometry (optometrists) are primary eye care providers. They evaluate and care for the eye and visual system, including diagnosing and treating eye related diseases and conditions.
An optometrist's examination may include assessing the structure of the eyes for possible disorders or diseases and evaluating how well a person can focus, coordinate their eyes, and see depth and color. Specific conditions they may diagnose and/or treat themselves or by referral include diseases of the eye such as cataracts and glaucoma, systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and vision conditions such as farsightedness and astigmatism.
Treatment Provided by Optometrists
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses
- Vision therapy
- Aids for low vision
- Certain eye disease medications
- Referral to other health care providers
Education and Training
Optometrists earn an undergraduate degree at a college or university. This is followed by four years at a college of optometry, where a doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree is acquired. In some cases, this is followed by a residency.
