Macular Degeneration

About Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in the United States. This eye disease occurs when complications occur in the macula, the part of the retina that brings clear vision.

Symptoms
  • Progressive loss of visual clarity
  • Vision that is distorted
  • Slow impairment of color vision
  • A dark space appearing in the middle of vision

Treatment

If you have any of the symptoms of macular degeneration, you should visit your optometrist for an evaluation. Unfortunately, treatment for macular generation is scarce. Laser procedures may help with the rare wet type if attempted early in the condition, however there is no known treatment for the common dry form. New studies have shown the potential for some vitamins and minerals to stop the development and advance of macular degeneration (see section entitled "Vision and Nutrition").

No current treatment can bring back vision already impaired by this disease, however instruments used to improve low vision (such as microscopic lenses) can help patients take advantage of the vision they have left.

How Can I Save Money on Vision Care?

Proper vision care is vital for both adults and children, yet it is often overlooked because of the cost. You may be able to save a substantial amount of money through an insurance program, such as the vision plans offered through HumanaOne.
